Is Your Skin Care Routine Ready For Fall Weather?

Wave goodbye to warm summer days – Fall is in full swing and cooler temps are on the way. That crisp autumn air is notoriously dry and has a significant impact on the health and appearance of your skin. So we ask, have you updated your skin care routine to protect against harsher weather and colder temperatures? What worked for the summer, might just not be enough for the fall. We thought it would be helpful to highlight some key changes you should be making to maintain radiant, clear skin this fall.

5 Tips To Supercharge Your Fall Skin Care Routine

1. For Super-Sensitive Skin, Hydrate.

People who live with sensitive skin, psoriasis, or eczema, might experience a tingling, burning sensation or notice increased sensitivity for a few days (even weeks) during the transition of seasons. Medical grade skincare has studies to support its use.

When the outside temperatures are hot and humid, your skin doesn’t want heavy moisturizers and oils as they can cause clogged pores, inflammation, and acne. But as the temps begin to drop, colder air outside combined with dry indoor heating leaves your skin in need of serious hydration.

2. Start Using a Richer Moisturizer

Throughout the summer, lightweight moisturizers often do the job for most skin types. Unfortunately, they aren’t strong enough to negate the effects of harsher, colder temperatures. One of our favorite moisturizers, Hydraclarité, contains Hinokitiol, an ingredient derived from cedar trees. This organic, anti-inflammatory ingredient soothes skin and reduces redness, making it a go-to moisturizer.

Opting for a richer moisturizer is so important because they help prevent additional moisture loss. Now this means different things to different people. If you’re currently using a gel, consider switching to lotion. If you typically use lotion, look for a heavier-hydrating lotion or consider going a step further and opt for hydrating serum.

This isn’t just a wild guess, this has been proven by science. Low temperatures and low humidity lead to a general decrease in the function of your skin barrier, leaving your skin more exposed to allergens, irritants, and at an increased risk of skin blemishes.

3. Start The Season Right With A Medical-Grade Facial

One of the best things you can do to prepare your skin is to have a medical-grade facial. Think of this as a clean slate, clearing away any dead cells or build-up from the summer months, providing a clean, healthy foundation to ward off the harsher elements of the fall season.

Medical-grade facials provide a comprehensive range of skincare solutions to help revitalize your skin and prevent damage. While over-the-counter products are effective for daily use, the team at Form Medical Aesthetics offers professional skin care services that cleanse deeper, exfoliate better, and leave your skin feeling and looking better than ever before. If you have never experienced any of these treatments, do your skin a favor and visit the team at Form Medical Aesthetics.

4. Exfoliate

Many people think cutting back on exfoliating is a good idea in the winter. In fact, the opposite is true! Removing dead skin cells using either chemical or physical exfoliation will help your skin look its best. Keeping cell turnover high with an at-home routine that includes an AHA, or retinoid is recommended for most skin types. Be sure to combine this with an ultra-hydrating moisturizer in the winter months.

Exposure to the cold outdoor air combined with the dry indoor heat can dry out your skin cells. Therefore, you need to get rid of the dead skin cells more often than you would normally do during the hotter months. Ditch your duller complexion by increasing your exfoliation routine to approximately twice a week.

5. Continue to Protect Your Skin With SPF

Sunscreen is only important in the summer, right? Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Fall is a season during which a substantial amount of UV damage occurs because people assume the sun isn’t as strong.

UVB rays may weaken as fall and winter set in, but they are responsible for suntans and sunburns. UVA rays, on the other hand, the ones that cause skin cancer and premature skin aging, remain just as strong as in the summer. If you’re hoping to negate the damaging effects of the sun, then sunscreen is a must, year-round.
